In the define phase, remember that our guiding question should be: Which of my users’ needs or problems are the most important for my design to address?
To answer this question, you’ll use problem statements, hypothesis statements, and, finally, goal statements.

A problem statement explains a user’s need that your design should solve. It helps designers understand what users need, why it matters, and what the design should focus on before creating solutions. For any design project, including your final portfolio, you should create one problem statement for each user persona.

A problem statement defines a user’s need that a product must address, while a hypothesis statement expresses the designer’s best-informed assumption about how that need can be met. When written effectively, hypothesis statements help designers clarify their goals, which is essential for the next phase of the Design Thinking process: ideating solutions.
